Job Requirements & Duties

  • Assist veterinarians in diagnosing and treating livestock and farm animals
  • Handle and restrain livestock safely to prevent stress or injury
  • Provide care in veterinary clinics, research labs, farms, and livestock operations
  • Observe animals daily and report health issues to producers or veterinarians
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments to sick or injured animals
  • Collect samples, run lab tests, and take x-rays or ultrasound images
  • Respond to emergencies and give immediate care to animals in distress
  • Keep detailed records of treatments, health checks, and care plans
  • Follow biosecurity procedures to prevent disease outbreaks and protect herd health
  • Promote animal welfare through responsible animal care

Education & Training

  • A two-year diploma in veterinary technology is typically required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., animal bioscience, animal science technology, or animal health technology) is considered an asset.
