Job Requirements & Duties

  • Hire, train, and guide kitchen and service staff to help them succeed and work effectively
  • Plan menus and source ingredients, often working with local farms or suppliers to get fresh, high-quality foods
  • Supervise food preparation to ensure safety, quality, flavour, and presentation for customers
  • Ensure all staff follow food safety, hygiene, and workplace health rules
  • Oversee budgets, track expenses, and manage payroll for the food service team
  • Organize training and professional development to improve staff skills and service quality
  • Arrange for sales training and professional development for employees
  • Solve operational problems and make sure the kitchen and service run efficiently

Education & Training

  • Some post-secondary education in hospitality or culinary arts can be helpful. However, many employers only require a high school diploma and several years of experience in the food service industry.
  • On-the-job training, including yearly learning sessions and courses to update industry skills, is essential for success.
